SETI@Home became a very successful, famous and popular scientific analysis project, bringing hundresd of thousands ot people together, donating the power of their home computers to a large project. The concept of Distributed Computing is all about breaking up big tasks into chunks that can be sent out to individual computers. The people at Berkeley University had succeeded in caputing the imagination, and the computing power of the world, and from 2002 went on to create a flexible computing platform to help other scientific projects exploit the vast number of home computers; they called it BOINC
Since July '04, BOINC has enabled dozens of complex projects to harness the power of Distributed Computing, including the revamped SETI@Home project.
The core of BOINC was released as version 3.18, and has been continuously developed to improve stability, efficiency, new features and to support new projects. Version 5.8.0 (Dec '06) saw the addition of a simple GUI that allowed users with less interest in the technical workings of BOINC to display information and progress of their projects.
The simple view / simple GUI can be customised, and you are welcome to download the kilobox 'skin' for your client.
